Rates of oxidation of refractory chemical species were studied experimentally with ozone and ultraviolet light. Ethanol, acetic acid, glycine, glycerol, and palmitic acid were chosen as representative of the five types of refractories found in municipal and industrial wastewaters. A refractory index scale was established which ranks the compounds in order of difficulty of oxidation. Ozone alone was not particularly effective in oxidizing the subject species, but activation by ultraviolet radiation resulted in substantial increases in reaction rate for all species. Also, data were collected on mass transfer and ozone auto-decomposition.
