Factors affecting mass transfer of ozone into aqueous systems are discussed; these include: ozone demand and miscibility of the substance (s) involved, ozone concentration, carrier gas (air or oxygen), contact system (method and contact time), bubble size and flow patterns, pressure and temperature. Standardized diffusers, cocurrent and countercurrent liquid flows, and multichamber systems are discussed. In a 3-chamber contact system, 60% of the ozone is introduced countercurrently into chamber 2 and the balance into chamber 3. Off-gases from chamber 3 (containing up to 15% of the original ozone) now are introduced into chamber 1, which has the highest ozone demand. In this manner greater than 98% utilization of ozone can be guaranteed. Submerged turbines can be used in combination with diffusers.
