Ozone pretreatment was applied before coagulation, filtration and disinfection of secondary treated wastewater in a prototype plant at Chino Basin Municipal Water District, Cucamonga, California. The preozonation step removed 50-70% of the turbidity, color, suspended solids and COD, plus 99.9% of seeded polio viruses. The tertiary effluent quality met objectives of minimal salt addition, efficient virus removal and cost-effectiveness.
