This paper discusses some results of ozone oxidation of mono-, di- and trichlorophenols in aqueous solution. The organic chlorine is converted to chloride. The yield of the resulting chloride lies between 60 and 95% of the theoretical value. Complete degradation of one mmole of chlorophenol requires 3.5-5 mmoles of ozone, which corresponds to an ozone consumption of 50-60%. The oxidation products have been found to be biodegradable. The ozone oxidation of maleic acid gave glyoxylic acid, oxalic acid, formic acid and CO_2.
