OZONE AS A TREATMENT PROCESS FOR COLOUR REMOVAL FROM DRINKING WATER

Bay Bulls Big Pond, an impounding reservoir, is being developed as a new source of supply for the St. John's (Newfoundland) Regional Water System. Analytical tests have shown the quality of the raw water to be very soft, acidic, low in alkalinity, low in dissolved minerals, low in turbidity, and moderate in colour (95% of the time the colour is less than or equal to 30 TCU). Pilot plant studies were carried out to examine the treatment process most effective and economical for colour removal. These studies included chemical precipitation of colour with alum and a polyelec-trolyte, followed by filtration and oxidation of the colour with ozone, followed by filtration. Ozone was found to be a viable and competitive treatment process for colour removal.
