A 2-4% (weight) ozone-oxygen gas mixture was concurrently contacted with water in a 1/4 inch (0.635 cm) diameter stainless steel Kenics Static Mixer of 21 elements housed in a horizontal glass tube. A system was designed to determine the quantity of absorbed ozone based on an ozone balance between the two phases wherein ozone accountability ranged from 90 to 99%. By using the measured concentrations of ozone in both phases in the appropriate equations, mass transfer coefficients were evaluated. K_Ga ranged from 148 to 643 mg/(min)(mole fraction) over a range of liquid and gas flow rates from 0.5 to 1.9 liters/min. The mass transfer coefficients were correlated with Reynolds number and other appropriate flow parameters of the contactor.
