Thermal Imaging of Pyrotechnic Initators Used In Automotive Airbag Applications

Several tests to analyze the performance characteristics of airbag initiators have been developed in the past. Some of these tests include pressure vs. time measurement using data acquisition equipment, thermal transient, anddelay time quantified by first current to first light or pressure. An important characteristic which has eluded the industry is the thermal image produced by the initiator. Through research and experimentation a method has been develped which utilizes a high resolution pyroelectric camera to capture this event. The camera, along with supporting hard-ware is capable of recording the IR energy produced by an initiator.
