In applications of actuators where speed of acutation and compactness are paramount, pyrotechnic energy sources have been the power supplies of choice, despite the drawbacks associated with their inherent explosive properties. Electromagnetics for actuation, and electromagnetic release of mechanically stored actuation energy, are proposed as viable alternatives for some applications.
