The interaction between an igniter and a granular propellant bed influences the performance of a submunition dispersion system to a large degree. This is especially true for sodium azide based propellant, which are difficult to ignite. The ignition system plays an equally important role as the propellant in providing effective ignition of propellant. In recent years, the design of effective ignition systems for submunition dispersion systems has been a great challenge to pyrotechnists.
