The first speaker in the session presents recent work on the development and use of lexical resources in information retrieval. The talk describes a research system which integrates access to a variety of lexical resources for formulating searches, indexing documents, and answering queries. The second speaker discusses his work on using a large general purpose syntax-based parser for automatic indexing of phrases in text. He presents the results of experiments that have tested the effectiveness of using these phrases for automatic document retrieval. The final speakers present work in progress on a natural language processing system being developed for use in intelligent information retrieval environments. They discuss aspects of the system and recent work with a test collection of queries and citation records to the biomedical literature.
