Knowledge about the interactions among the wood polymers in the outer fibre wall layers is essential for understanding fibre separation in thermomechanical and chemithermomechanical pulping processes. For this reason dynamic two-dimensional FT-IR spectroscopy was applied to examine the primary cell wall of spruce fibres from a mechanical pulp and from a slightly sulphonated pulp showing a preferred fracturing ability in the primary wall and giving improved properties in relation to the energy demand in refining. It was shown that the low degree sulphonation in particular weakened the lignin interactions with and pectin and protein.
