Experienced peeling operators are able to adjust their device settings by hearing the sound coming from the process. Starting from this postulate, a research program was undertaken to evaluate the possibility of using acoustic or vibration measurements as inputs to feed a decision support system for operators. The present paper deals with lathe checks frequency measurement while using an accelerometer screwed on the knife in the cutting direction or a microphone next to the cutting area. A simple procedure, based on Power Spectrum Density ratio, is proposed to measure the average lathe checks frequency of the veneer during the process.
