The dimensional stabilization of wood by chemical means is of interest in order to prevent shrinkage and swelling due to changes in relative humidity of the surrounding environment. Cell wall bulk stabilization by poly(ethylene glycol), PEG, is a well-known example, although with disadvantage of only being deposited in the cell wall, not bonded, allowing for migration when exposed to further humidity. In the present study bulk stabilization using reactive poly(ethylene glycol)-diacrylate, PEGDA, is investigated. It allows waterborne treatment of wood, which after polymerization induced by electron beam treatment, leads to formation of a wood polymer composite with improved dimensional stability. By monitoring swelling behaviour the location of PEGDA in the wood cell walls is affirmed and explains the dimensional stabilization by its bulking effect.
