Next to material properties the structural and economical performance of the cross section is the most important design issue and its production that is still determined by traditional transformation technologies is an important matter The purpose of structural elements is to transfer loads and moments respecting a prescribed serviceability limit. This is done by a product of two factors: strength which has a linear influence and a geometrical parameter such as the moment of inertia for bending for example in which the height of the beam is raised to the power. Therefore structural components are easier to be dimensioned by varying the dimensions of the cross section but by changing the strength class.
