The Vasa ship is perhaps the most important archeological artefact in Sweden, at least in terms of annual number of spectators. It sank in the!7th century and was waterlogged for more than 300 years. An important issue is the degree of degradation of Vasa oak. Previous data in our lab showed that radial properties in compression loading are redcued compared with recent oak.. However, it was unclear whether the reason for this is in degree of degradation of the wood itself or due to dimensional stabilization by PEG impregnation of the cell wall. The present study shows strong effects of PEG content on reduced mechanical properties in radial compression.
