摘要

Absorption coefficient for gamma rays in wood tissue, reflecting characteristics like density, chemical composition, general structure of the latter etc., can be used for getting an insight into these properties of wood as a very heterogeneous material. The effect of hardwood species upon the absorption coefficient values has been studied utilising a portable gamma-ray source and a Geiger-Mueller counter, in view of the importance of hardwood species in practical applications and the relevance of their machining. The reproducibility of the method and its results have also been examined, and discussed with respect to those for some other species.
