In the current design process of steel latticed towers used to support electricalrntransmission lines, the structure’s dynamic behaviour is not considered. However,rnthe main loading to be taken into account in the electrical transmission line tower’srnstructural analysis is produced by the wind, which acts dynamically over thernstructural system composed by towers and cables. In addition, it’s not uncommonrnfor slender towers to present disadvantageous dynamic properties, making themrnvulnerable to the wind action. Considering that many accidents associated to thisrnkind of structure occur even for wind velocities below that specified in the designrnprocess, it’s possible that most of these accidents have been produced by dynamicrnactions. This paper proposes the use of a finite element model that can accuratelyrnsimulate the coupled behaviour between the transmission line cables and thernsuspension structures when subjected to the dynamic random loading produced byrnthe wind. Results obtained in this investigation indicated that the dynamic responserncan be very meaningful for the system structural behaviour. In this case, the use of arnstatic structural analysis can lead to a non-trustable design of the towers.
