Seismic base isolation, which is typically performed using friction pendulum and/orrnlead rubber bearings, is an efficient building and bridge protection system againstrnearthquake hazard that achieves seismic energy mitigation by decoupling thernstructure from its foundation. Numerous numerical and experimental studies havernbeen conducted on this topic over the last decades and many projects have beenrnsuccessfully functioning with such systems that, on the other hand, normallyrnincrease substantially the cost of the structure. This study aims at the development ofrnlow-cost seismic base isolation of reinforced concrete (RC) buildings using scraprnautomobile tires as an elastic foundation system capable of reducing seismic distressrnon the superstructure. For this purpose, a series of finite element dynamic analysesrnhas been performed. The results of this detailed parametric investigation show thatrnunder certain circumstances the use of this low-cost isolation can improve thernseismic response of the examined structure.
