In this paper the spread of the sewage plume, discharged into the Gulf of Patras, isrnstudied using three-dimensional numerical simulations, for the winter regime. Thernhydrodynamic circulation in the Gulf and the advection-diffusion of the effluentrnhave been simulated using the MIKE-3-FM code. The simulations show that, in allrnthe cases examined, dilutions greater than 200 are achieved, even for conservativernpollutants. Further, the interaction of the sewage plume with the Glafkos stream,rndischarged at the near shore region of the Gulf, is studied. Based on the numericalrnsimulations it is shown that the stream’s effect is restricted only to the right of thernaxis discharge point, leaving unaffected the south-western coasts, where the onlyrnpossible mechanism causing pollution seems to be the sewage plume.
