The use of bulk explosive for mining applications started in the 50's. Since then millions of tons of that material have been transported by road. However during that time, there have been several road incidents involving them. This type of incident has forced the explosives manufacturers as well as regulatory organizations to look for a better classification of explosives in order to regulate the industry as well as to mitigate community concerns over the classification of mixtures of substances that are regarded as precursors to explosives.rnSince 1999 the United Nations Committee of Experts on the Transport of Dangerous Goods (UNCETDG) has been working on methods to assess the suitability of blasting agents for transport.rnExplosives manufacturers of both emulsions and slurries have carried out dozens of tests in order to find the most suitable test to be recommended. As an emulsion manufacturer, Orica Mining Services concentrated its effort in the physical and chemical effect of heat on emulsions to establish the criteria to discriminate between acceptable and unacceptable levels of hazard during transport. This article will describe the findings of this research.
