In-Situ Burning of Heavy Oils and Orimulsion: Analysis of Soot and Residue

Four types of heavy oils, two types of Bunker C, Orimulsion and Bitumen were burned in-situ. Burning tests were conducted in 1 m and 1.5 m square pans. Soot was gathered from glass-fibre filters on a sampling pump. The extracts from these filters was analysed for PolyAromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs). The soot of the fire shows that the PAHs are enriched in pyrogenic PAHs and derive from the petrogenic PAHs in the starting oils. The PAH content is lower than in many other environmental samples.rnThe maximum burn efficiency was about 70%, and the residue was largely asphaltenes and resins. Once cooled this residue was a solid. Samples of this residue were analysed for Saturates Aromatics Resins and Asphaltenes (SARA) and viscosity measured.rnThe analysis of the residue and soot provide interesting insights into the chemistry of the burning. The SARA analysis of the residue shows that heavy components such as the resins and asphaltenes are largely not burned by the fire and are accumulated in the residue.
