Approximately 5,000 km of shoreline on Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte Islands) has recently been mapped using the ShoreZone Mapping System. Mapping data is based on oblique videography, which is web-posted, and over 100 ground-based observation stations. Unique aspects of the ShoreZone mapping program are: (a) the system is a biophysical mapping program where both physical and biological coastal resources data are mapped, (b) wave exposure levels, which provide a significant constraint to response activities, are mapped in detail, (c) the oblique imagery is considered as data and is web-posted, and (d) the resulting mapping data is web-posted. On the Haida Gwaii shoreline, sea access in the event of a spill will be restricted due to high exposure levels (~27% of the coast not accessible), and helicopter access will be restricted due to the narrow width of the shore zone in many locations. About 25% of the coast cannot be accessed by either vessel or helicopter. The web-posting of both imagery and biophysical mapping data ensure that there is a high resolution, operational spill planning tool in place for Haida Gwaii.
