摘要

Multiple researchers have shown improved surface finish and tool wear when utilizing elliptical vibration-assisted machining (EVAM) [1]. EVAM applies micrometer-scale elliptical vibration to a diamond tool. EVAM can produce optical-quality surface finishes on steel, which otherwise causes drastic wear to diamond tools during conventional (non-EVAM) diamond turning. This high level of wear is attributed to a thermally activated chemical reaction between the diamond and iron-based alloy. Wear of diamond tools cutting steel have shown to follow an Arrhenius-type relation with tool temperatures obtained from finite element modeling [2].
