For rotors, the consequences of non-uniform circular elasticity are twice-per-revolution error motion for fixed sensitive direction and major and minor centering errors for rotating sensitive direction. The case is reversed for stators and stator support structures. These effects apply to bearings, spindles, chucks, workpieces, machine tools, metrology equipment, gyroscopes, and flyrods. Examples are given for horizontal and vertical axes, with illustrations of specific imperfections. Distinction is made between error motion and compliance so that unambiguous specifications can be constructed and error sources identified.
