Ca-α/β-Sialon powders were prepared by a reaction nitridation method using Si, Al, CaCO_3 and Al_2O_3 as starting materials, and their oxidation resistance and thermal stability were also investigated. As-prepared Ca-α/β-Sialon powders showed great thermal stability even when subjected to 20h heat-treatment at 1550℃. They also exhibited good oxidation resistance at 1250-1300℃, as a result of the passive oxidation mechanism arising from the formation of a protective layer composed of anorthite and cristobalite product phases.
