Electrolytes for Lithium Batteries Based on Polysiloxane Hosts

Ionic conductivity studies of several classes of polysiloxanes doped with lithium bis(trifluorosulfonyl imide), LiTFSI, are reported. The polysiloxanes range from linear polymers to lower molecular weight liquids. These lower molecular weight liquids have also been formed into free-standing gels. The ionic conductivities at 25℃ are quite high. The highest conductivity for the liquids was 2.7 x 10~(-4) Scm~(-1) while the best gel exhibited a conductivity of 1.3 x 10~(-4) Scm~(-1). Thermal measurements confirm that these electrolytes are totally amorphous at ambient temperature. Variable temperature conductivity measurements demonstrate that polymer chain segmental motion contributes to the conductivity.
