The effects of alloying elements in carbon steel on acid dew corrosion were investigated. Field exposure tests in waste gas treatment facilities and laboratory corrosion tests were conducted. Three low alloy steels such as COR-TEN A (P-Cu-Cr-Ni), COR-TEN B (Cu-Cr-Ni) and S-TEN1 (Cu-Sb) were tested with carbon steel. Results revealed that the corrosion rates of the low alloy steels tested were significantly affected by alloying elements. The addition of Cu-Sb lowered the corrosion rates most effectively in acid dew corrosion environments with or without chloride containing ash. A synergetic effect of the addition of Cu with Sb on lowering the corrosion rate of steel was confirmed by corrosion tests of Cu-Sb-Fe alloys. Precipitation of Cu_2Sb may retard anodic iron dissolution and the hydrogen evolution reaction, which can lead to a lower corrosion rate.
