The change of characteristics of pores in the power particles by milling was investigated together with those of powder characteristics and sinterability. The sample used in the experiment was the UO_2 powder prepared by AUC conversion process, of which the characteristics are ; of average particle size of 20μm and spheroidal shape giving free flowing property. When the powder underwent milling treatment for about 1 hr, average particle size decreased from 25 to 0.5μm corresponding the surface area increase from 4.8m~2/g to 6.0m~2/g.rnThe pore size distribution for unmilled powder was bimodal, the first peak being between 3 and 8μm and the second between 0.05 and 0.2μm. As milling continued, change in pore volume was such that the first peak decreased and that of the second increased both in the powder and compacted body, but the size unchanged.rnWhen the milled powder was compacted, pore size and volume decreased as compaction pressure increased. As the sinterability of milled UO_2 powder increased due to the change in powder characteristics, about 3% T.D. of sintered density increment occurred compared with virgin condition in reducing atmosphere(1700℃ /4h, H_2 atm.), grain size being independent of the change in powder characteristics. When the powder was sintered in oxidizing atmosphere(1250℃/4h, CO_2/CO atm.), grain size increased up to about 2 times(9-16μm) but also found to be independent of powder characteristics in this atmosphere.
