Complex processes with significant time delays are difficult to optimize and control because of the multitude of variables that can affect the final product. Examples of such processes in the pulp mill are continuous pulping and oxygen delignification. Accurate models can facilitate the control and optimization of these processes. In this paper, the develpment and application of statistical models for a Kamyr continuous digester and oxygen delignification reactor are discussed. Statistical modeling is based on a multivariate technique called factor analysis. Modeling results show that about half of the variablility seen in kappa for both the digester and oxygen reactor can be explained by inadequate control of process variables. Themodels also show which process variables should be better controlled to improve digester and O_2 reactor performance.
