Moving into the Year 2000 will cause many existing computer systems (hardware and software) to malfunction if no action is taken. The Year 2000 Problem (Y2K) is not simply an information systems issue. Althoough the majority of Y2K problems are located in IS systems, the sad truth is that any system anywhere that uses dates may be threatened. Just as today's railroad uses a rail standard derived from the width of a Roman chariot, all modern computer systems inherit their default conventions from the mainframe era, when it was common practice to encode the year as a two-digit field. The impact of this issue depends on swhether the computer system uses calendar date calculations in performing its functions, and what format and assumptions have been used to handle dates.
