Aniline is the major toxicants in petrochemical wastewater (PW). And sewage treatment systems may experience mainly seasonal transients of which winter may represent the most challenging due to reduced microbial activity. Efficient and reliable aniline removal is critically important to prevent toxicity discharge and ensure microorganism activity at low temperature. Acinetobacter-calcoaceticus JH-9 and mixed flora from domestication were tested in laboratory sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) for their ability to enhance aniline removal by biomass from a full-scale biotreatment system treating PWs at low temperature. Both of them enhanced aniline removal efficiency but not removal of total organic carbon (TOC) by either pH-shocked or starved activated sludge. These two bacteria also increased aniline removal when the sludge was given high concentration (260 mg/L) of aniline. Results suggest that it is feasible and potentially useful to enhance aniline removal by bioaugmentation using aniline-degrading bacteria such as JH-9 and mixed flora.
