Growing world populations and increasing lifestyle standards are straining our current infrastructure's ability to provide sufficient supplies of safe drinking water,affordable and sustainable energy,and chemical feedstocks for production of critical materials and products.At the same time,these activities are producing growing quantity of solid and liquid wastes.Sustainably meeting these needs represents a grand challenge that will require transformative breakthroughs and technologies.
