One of the nonvolatile derivatives of hydrazine is 1-methyl-1-cyanoethylhydrazine that can be readily synthesized by the control addition of monomethylhydrazine to acrylonitrile. The nucleophilic addition of monomethylhydrazine can produce 1-methyl-1-cyanoethylhydrazine in high yield (more than 90% yield). Vacuum distillation is applied for the separation and purification of the product. The 1-methyl-1-cyanoethylhydrazine has two desired properties that can be interested for any liquid propellant, namely low vapor pressure and high positive heat of formation. The performance and decomposition products of this compound are determined as a liquid mono- and bipropellant by the use of BKW equation of state. The results show that its performance is comparable with conventional derivatives of hydrazine.
