Vertical Distribution of Radon Concentrations in the Atmosphere

Vertical distributions of radon (~(222)Rn) concentrations were measured up to 5 km in the atmosphere around central Japan. About 50 L air was sampled in a Tedlar® (polyvinyl fluoride, PVF) bag by using an aircraft. The ~(222)Rn concentrations in the bags were measured with electrostatic radon monitor. The detection limit is 0.10 Bq·m~(-3) for measuring time of 6 h. The measured concentrations were corrected by considering ~(222)Rn decay rate and the atmospheric pressure at the sampling altitude. The ~(222)Rn concentration decreases rapidly with increasing altitude. The high ~(222)Rn concentrations were observed at about 500 and 1000 m under atmospheric boundary layer over the land areas. The ~(222)Rn concentrations sampled over the sea were lower due to no ~(222)Rn exhalation from the sea surface. The vertical distribution could be explained fairly well by using the analysis of air mass trajectory and one dimensional diffusion model.
