Certification of all electro-technical products for sale and use in the EU has new become a legal requirement. This paper addresses the need and considers the options that manufacturers have in meeting the requirements of the directive. The routes to conformity are outlined and the options for railway systems, subsystems and their components are identified. The limitations of each are discussed and solutions are proposed for different types of equipment and systems. The requirement for the manufacturer to provide a sound justification for conformity is considered with the various options that are available. The use of the technical construction file as a means of certifying products and systems is discussed. The expansion of this route to cover complete railway systems is also discussed.
