Class 373 3-phase drive trains, although very similar to the established French TGV high-speed trains, present some new and unique challenges for safe high-speed operation over the railway infrastructure in the UK. The designated Class 373 routes were electrified and resignalled at different times since 1965 using evolving design standards. It is now mandatory to present a Safety Case for running on UK routes. The ongoing risk assessment is identifying, quantifying and resolving the train compatibility hazards on these routes. The electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) with the existing signalling equipment is the key safety issue. This papaer describes the strategies adopted for EMC risk assessments, application of safety targets, and recommendations for immunisation of the infrastructure.
