Like them or hate them, the success of the rail industry very much depends on the application of standards in a process, which dictates whether a vehicle is or is not acceptable to operate within the infrastructure concerned. Such standards lay down the criteria which ensures adequate levels of safety for the vehicle for the conveyance of freight or passengers over prescribed and agreed routes.
