The temperature control system on early metros such as London Underground is self regulating. Heat generated within the system is balanced by heat losses through displaced air, through the tunnel wall, and by warming up the infrastructure itself. The more heat gain, the higher the system temperature and the higher the losses. The net effect is that the system is often too hot.rnSimple in-car air conditioning will increase heat gains. All of the power applied to the air conditioning units will appear within the systems boundary as additional heat. On the face of it, air conditioning of trains within an early metro looks unacceptable due to the tunnel air temperatures.rnSystem Engineering is used to explore possible solutions.
