The 700 ft-long Twin Tunnels west of Denver have been a notorious traffic chokernpoint on Interstate 70. As part of a program to improve reliability along the entire I-70rnmountain corridor Colorado DOT undertook widening both tunnels over two-9 monthrnsummer closures beginning in 2013. CDOT elected a Construction Manager/GeneralrnContractor delivery method to address the aggressive schedule whereby the Designersrnand Contractor worked together with CDOT to optimize the design and specificationsrnto maximize the production rates while maintaining safety and quality. Paper describesrnhow drill-and-blast methods advanced from multiple headings were used to widen eachrnof the two-lane tunnels from a 32 ft width to 53 ft through variably fractured and weatheredrngneiss and pegmatite including how a novel, dual form concrete lining operationrnwas applied.
