On modelling of masonry buildings response in Dutch soft-ground tunnelling

This paper describes an overview of current numerical studies carried out at Delft University of Technology, focused on settlement damage prediction associated with soft-ground tunnelling. The response of a historical masonry building due to TBM-tunnelling induced ground movements was chosen for the benchmark study. Preliminary results are reported both in sagging type and hogging type situations. Some experiences in making choices of numerical modelling and encountered difficulties are summarized. Improvements on computational modelling and computation mechanics aspects involved in assessing cracking damage form the ultimate research targets.
