Small magnetic circuits, which are useful for the optical microscopic study of magnetophoresis and electromagnetophoresis of nano/microparticles in liquid, were fabricated from Nd-Fe-B permanent magnets. The tip area of the pole piece was important parameter to determine the magnetic flux density in the gap of the pole pieceof the magnetic circuit. We have attained 3.3 T in the 0.4 mm gap of the square pyramidalpole piece with the tip area of 0.4 mm × 0.4 mm by a small magnetic circuit (ca. 2 cm × 4 cm × 5 cm). High performance of the magnetic circuits was demonstrated by themagnetophoretic velocimetry andelectromagnetophoresis of test dispersion samples including nano/microparticles.
