摘要

The effect of hydrogen on the mechanical properties of a low carbon steel has been investigated. In-situ tensile and hardness tests have been carried out while charging hydrogen. It has been observed that there is a substantial reduction in ductility as a result of hydrogen charging while there is no change in hardness. Charging of hydrogen affects both the prenecking as well as the postnecking deformation. Hydrogen charging has been found to increase the number of dimple nucleating sites. It has been concluded that hydrogen charging enhances the number of dimple nucleating sites which promotes the process of ductile fracture.
