Dynamic Stochastic General Equilibrium Game as Economic's Teaching Support

The paper presents possible uses of an economic simulation game for the economic theory instruction at universities and also previous experience. The economic simulation game that is called "DSGEgame" (Dynamic Stochastic General Equilibrium Game) is specialized software developed and implemented at the Faculty of Economics (FEK), the University of West Bohemia, in Pilsen. DSGEgame is an object-oriented PHP code and uses MySQL database to store data. The whole application runs on the server -www.dsgegame.zcu.cz, where individual players (students) log in by their university login and password. Of course, students and teachers from other universities and institutions can register and then log in. The number of players is unlimited. The game can be played as long as the administrator's/teacher's wants and it runs in separate rounds, in which students enter their demand and supply on the markets. After the completion of a round, the market equilibrium is automatically calculated by the server and another round then follows. The method of entering demand and supply and the calculation method of a market price correspond to the Walrasian auctioneer. An evaluation is conducted according to the sum of discounted utility for all rounds. The score is then added to results in study subjects, and it thus increases the total points needed to obtain a credit and pass an exam. The first part of the paper presents basic principles and a structure of the game. The second one deals with agents' playing methods and the time flow of the game. The third part shows the simplest configuration, which is possible, and which corresponds to the Ramsey-Cass-Koopmans model with discrete time and endogenous labor supply. This is the simplest dynamic model of general equilibrium, where individual agents create the whole economy together by their particular behavior. The fourth part deals with the methodological and content interconnection with bachelor's and master's courses of microeconomics and macroeconomics as are taught at FEK. It also sums up previous experience in the practical application in classes. Students affirmatively accepted the possibility to "experience directly" economic theories within this game. Thus, DSGEgame represents a key innovation in teaching at FEK, when the dry explanation of abstract theories is accompanied by real experience. Another advantage for teachers is the fact that the game runs without any interventions of theirs, with the exception of the case when they conduct an activistic economic policy.
