Simultaneous measurement of flow velocities around an arbitrarily moving body has been achieved by applying image processing methods to PIV experiments. This technique encompasses both two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) PIV measurements. A contour-texture analysis based on user-defined textons was applied to determine the arbitrarily moving interface in the 2D PIV, and a tracking approach with prediction and correction by textons was introduced for a time-saving calculation. For a tomographic 3D PIV, red fluorescent particles were used as tracer particles. Particle images could be extracted by using an image separation. To improve the reconstruction accuracy, the volume self-calibration technique was employed. Three-dimensional surface shapes were reconstructed by tracking the surface deformation. The surface reconstruction procedure with the tomographic PIV system was validated for various known shaped cylinder rotations.
