The process of crude oil refining involves the production of hazardous waste in the form of hydrated deposits containing hydrocarbons and other environmentally toxic chemical compounds, including heavy metals. Post-refinery oil sludge is difficult to treat and is classified as hazardous waste. One of the methods of treating this type of waste involves solidification in powder or granulate form. The study presents the results of tests involving solidified refinery deposits in the powder form as a binder for the stabilisation of fly ashes in road construction. Ashes which are characterised by excessive expansion, low bearing capacity and which do not meet standard requirements have been treated with a small addition of 2/6% solidified refinery deposit. Test results indicate that solidified deposits are capable of stabilising fly ashes. Fly ashes treated with a small addition of solidified refinery deposits take on new, improved geotechnical properties, rendering such compounds useful for application even in the top layers of road embankments and layers of the treated substrate. The application of solidified deposit binders provides an alternative to the costly technology of ash treatment involving mineral materials or stabilisation with conventional binders such as cement or lime.
