Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway Company operates the shortest rail link between Chicago and the Pacific Northwest. A rail inspector in North Dakota noticed that large cracks were opening up along side this track on a 70' high embankment in the Sheyenne River Valley. About 45 trains per day pass over the embankment at 60-miles per hour. Speeds were immediately reduced. An engineering firm and contractor were hired to analyze, design and construct the necessary repairs to keep the main line track open and restore train traffic to normal speed before a catastrophic failure occurred. The latest global position surveying equipment and a new precast concrete retaining wall were used at the site to save time and money safely.
