Empirical Solution for Estimating California Bearing Ratio of Wyoming Soils

The California bearing ratio (CBR) laboratory test is often used to estimate support characteristics of subgrade, subbase, and base course materials used beneath pavements. Completing actual CBR laboratory testing is not always feasible for a variety of reasons including difficulty and cost of collecting soil samples, cost of tests, time required for testing, preliminary planning stages, or in situations where a project covers a large expanse and testing is limited. In these situations, it is beneficial to estimate CBR values, particularly for subgrade soils. This paper presents an empirical method of estimating CBR values for a variety of soil types found throughout Wyoming based on soil parameters that can be easily estimated or obtained from quick, inexpensive laboratory tests. The empirical solution is based on general bearing capacity theory applied to the specifics of the CBR laboratory test and calibrated through regression analysis of actual laboratory test results for Wyoming soils. This method is not a replacement for laboratory analyses, but intended for situations where detailed analysis is not warranted.
