As part of NASA’s Game Changing Development Program (GCDP) Composite CryotankrnTechnology Development (CCTD) contract, the Boeing Company fabricated a 5.5 m diameterrntest article. The primary goal of this activity was to advance liquid hydrogen cryotank readinessrnlevels. The tank encompassed several challenging design/manufacturing features: (a) out-ofautoclaverncuring carbon/epoxy, (b) robotically fiber placed permeation resistant hybrid laminaternskins, and (c) one-piece co-cured/co-bonded spherical geometry with integral skirts. Thernsandwich structure skirts consisted of structurally efficient fluted core, i.e., angled laminate websrnwith radius fillers spaced between continuous laminate face sheets. This paper provides anrnoverview of the tooling and manufacturing approaches used to develop, fabricate, and bond therncore to the 5.5 m tank.
