Numerous treatment options are currently being evaluated to support the NEPA process. The INEEL is developing technologies to allow calcination of the liquid tank waste at higher temperature and net waste throughput. Technologies are also being developed to process the liquid tank waste using separation processes to partition radioactive and possibly hazardous components from the bulk inert components. Preliminary pilot plant calcination flowsheets have been successful at reducing the amount of aluminum that must be added to process the tank waste by 60%. Separation technologies have been demonstrated to be capable of decontaminating actual tank waste to levels below NRC Class A low-level waste criteria on a bench-scale. The baseline treatment method for the high-level waste calcine is to dissolve it in nitric acid, followed by separation processes and immobilization of the high and low-level waste fractions.
