The San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) initiated the Earthquake Safety Program in 2006 to upgrade vulnerable portions of the original BART system to ensure safety for the public and BART employees. BART identified a portion of the system, which provides a regional rail transit connection from the East Bay to the San Francisco peninsula, as the "Core System." The core includes the BART system from Rockridge Station to the Daly City Station. BART decided that this section deserved higher seismic performance because of the high passenger loads and train volume. The section will be upgraded, not only for life safety, but also to ensure that it returns to operation shortly after a major earthquake. The BART Earthquake Safety Program assessed the earthquake vulnerability and will strengthen the original system constructed between 1972 and 1976, with a service area spanning San Francisco, Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. The original BART system includes the following elements:rn1. 74 miles of trackrn2. 34 stations - 11 aerial, 14 underground and 9 at-gradern3. Transbay Tubern4. Berkeley Hills Tunnelrn5.
